"Boy Erased" author reflects on his memoir as film comes out

The movie based on Garrard Conley’s memoir will soon be out in wide release, so NPR hosted him for a recent interview.

Boy Erased is about growing up as the gay son of a conservative Baptist preacher and spending time in so-called conversion therapy.

The book was published in 2016; the film, which stars Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe as Conley’s parents, is in select theaters now and expands to wide release on Friday.
