The movie based on Garrard Conley’s memoir will soon be out in wide release, so NPR hosted him for a recent interview.

Boy Erased is about growing up as the gay son of a conservative Baptist preacher and spending time in so-called conversion therapy.

The book was published in 2016; the film, which stars Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe as Conley’s parents, is in select theaters now and expands to wide release on Friday.

You can listen to Conley give All Things Considered’s Michel Martin a preview of this emotionally raw book below or read a transcript on NPR’s website.
