When we shared the 2019 Booker Prize shortlist, many Facebook commenters — and, yes, Fussy staff — were unfamiliar with some of the titles.
So we were glad to see Literary Hub share an excerpt from one of the less publicized (at least in the U.S.) nominees.
10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World by Elif Shafak takes readers into the mind of a sex worker in Istanbul who has just been murdered.
The title refers to the length of time that passes between when her heart stops beating and her mind stops passing over her memories.
Shafak may not be a household name in the U.S., but she’s the most widely read female author in Turkey, according to Lit Hub.
She writes in both Turkish and English, and her seventeen books have been translated into more than fifty languages.
