2019 was a year full of returns — either delivered or promised — to beloved characters and dystopian worlds we loved to hate.

(See: The Testaments, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Blackie and Emma, and The Evening and the Morning.)

But young readers also enjoyed that same trend, with Eoin Colfer’s return to the the Fowl universe.

The Fowl Twins followed the younger brothers of Artemis Fowl, whose debut in 2001 was a bestseller.

Colfer discusses returning to that universe, watching the changes in children’s literature, and having the original novel adapted into a movie in the Guardian’s latest books podcast.
