The trick to remembering how many l's belong in the past tense and gerund form of cancel should be pretty easy.

As Writer’s Digest editor Robert Lee Brewer points out, the United States prefers "canceled" and "canceling"; everywhere else, "cancelled" and "cancelling."

You’ll have to remember cancel (always single l) and cancellation (always double l) on your own, though.
