Macmillan’s much-criticized changes to its ebook licensing policy has been canceled — temporarily.
It wasn’t the massive librarian pushback that prompted the publisher to walk back its new restrictions, but rather the current coronavirus outbreak.
Macmillan told libraries yesterday that contract terms will revert to those in effect in October 2019, reports The Digital Reader.
Nate Hoffelder adds in his post that librarians hadn’t been particularly enamored of the pre-October 2019 model, so it’s perhaps not time to pop the champagne.
Libraries and their professional organizations had decried the new (old?) restrictions that limited libraries to buying just one ebook copy of new releases upon publication and forced them to wait eight weeks for additional licenses.
