Congratulations are in order for Ayad Akhtar and Viet Thanh Nguyen, who will each take on a key role in a prestigious literary organization.

Akhtar, a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and novelist, will become the new president of PEN America in December, when the current president’s term expires.

PEN America describes itself as the nation’s foremost literary and free expression organization.

And speaking of Pulitzers — that award’s board will welcome its first Asian-American and Vietnamese-American member.

Nguyen is himself a Pulitzer winner (taking the fiction award in 2016 for The Sympathizer) and currently teaches at the University of Southern California.

The Pulitzer Prizes honor excellence in journalism and the arts.
