Balancing the various voices within an audiobook certainly doesn’t sound easy, and we commend the narrators who pull it off.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, though, is the newfound consideration for ethnic representation and misrepresentation.

That is: more narrators (of all backgrounds) are expressing discomfort with heavy-handed accents.

Slate magazine spoke with several audiobook narrators, from a variety of racial backgrounds, about the delicate balance that voice actors are striking as they bring books to life.
