Congratulations to Zaila Avant-garde, our 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee champion!

The fourteen-year-old from Louisiana won with the word “Murraya,” a genus of tropical Asiatic and Australian trees.

With her victory, Avant-garde became the first Black American to win the competition, according to the Associated Press.

But the Scripps trophy isn’t her first huge accomplishment, nor will it be her last.

Avant-garde already has three Guinness world records for dribbling multiple balls simultaneously and, unsurprisingly, aspires to either play or coach professional basketball.

Check out the AP's profile of Avant-garde to learn more about this remarkable teen.
