France has succeeded in keeping a historic Marquis de Sade manuscript within its borders.
The Guardian reports that the French government sought corporate help in February to purchase the scroll, which had been blocked for export since 2017.
Emmanuel Boussard, co-founder of the Boussard & Gavaudan investment fund, produced the €4.55 million ($5.37 million) needed to buy The 120 Days of Sodom, an erotic tale written in 1785 while the marquis was imprisoned in the Bastille.
The scroll will be housed in Paris’s Arsenal Library, which is a branch of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
