Congratulations to poet Ashley M. Jones, who can claim two firsts in her home state’s literary history.

Jones is both Alabama’s youngest poet laureate ever and its first Black poet laureate.

Her mission in both her poems and her leadership roles (including a guest editing spot for Poetry magazine) is to encourage reparations — something she defines as not just financial healing, but as gains in representation and acceptance.

Learn more about Jones and her poetry in her interview with NPR, which can be read as an article or transcript, or listened to below.

(And speaking of groundbreaking poets … Amanda Gorman has become Estée Lauder’s first Global Changemaker, a role that adds literacy-promotion duties to those of a typical brand spokesperson.)
