Unlike many other awards, the Nobel Prize for Literature doesn’t release a list — of any length — of the authors under consideration.
Yet somehow, oddsmakers can and still do make predictions for who might win.
Britain’s Ladbrokes has assigned favorite status to French author Annie Ernaux, reports the Guardian.
Others slightly behind her 8/1 odds, at 10/1, are some names readers might recognize (and others that they might not, depending on their literary tastes): Canadian poet Anne Carson, Japanese bestseller Haruki Murakami, Russian novelist Ludmila Ulitskaya, Canadian writer Margaret Atwood, Guadeloupean novelist Maryse Condé, and Kenyan author Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o.
In addition to the front-runner and perennial favorite-from-the-outside Murakami, bettors have placed a significant amount of money on Norwegian author Jon Fosse, a Ladbrokes spokesperson told the Guardian.
We’ll find out who was right tomorrow morning, when the Swedish Academy reveals its choice, and in the meantime, you can see a longer list of Nobel Prize for Literature odds on the Ladbrokes website.
