Author Alice Sebold used her experience as a sexual assault survivor as inspiration for her writing — both in the novel The Lovely Bones and the memoir Lucky.
The man accused and convicted of her assault, though, has just been formally exonerated.
NPR’s Neda Ulaby reports that people involved in adapting Lucky into a movie grew skeptical about Anthony J. Broadwater’s guilt, since he neither had a prior criminal record nor further arrests since he was released from prison in 1998.
A producer went so far as to leave the film and hire a private investigator to help Broadwater, who maintained his innocence from day one.
The movie based on Lucky is no longer going forward, according to Variety.
