The American Library Association has announced its choices for the top books, digital media, video, and audiobooks for children and young adults.
You can see all of the awards and their winners in an ALA press release, but here are a few highlights:
The John Newbery medal, which honors an outstanding contribution to children's literature, went to The Last Cuentista, by Donna Barba Higuera.
The Randolph Caldecott medal, which honors the most distinguished picture book for children, went to Watercress, written by Andrea Wang and illustrated by Jason Chin.
And the Coretta Scott King Book Award, which honors an African American author and illustrator of outstanding books for children and young adults, went to Unspeakable: The Tulsa Race Massacre, written by Carole Boston Weatherford and illustrated by Floyd Cooper.
(Sadly, Cooper died this past July.)
Extra credit reading: Slate noted that this year is the one hundredth anniversary of the first Newbery medal and takes a look at how the prize has evolved, especially in recent years.
