Happy Halloween! If you're ready to celebrate the literary way, you've come to the right place.
NPR revived its interviews with author Stephen King and writer-director Jordan Peele, both modern masters of horror, and also released a new one with another beloved creator of the creepy: R.L. Stine, whose Goosebumps series is now thirty years old.
And for some real classics, we have an Atlas Obscura piece on the taxidermied remains of Charles Dickens's pet raven Grip, which helped inspire Edgar Allan Poe's famous poem.
(Fun fact: You can actually see Grip; he's on display in the the Free Library of Philadelphia's Rare Books Department.)
Further back in time, still: there is actually a Frankenstein Castle in Germany, and it's the birthplace of a man we could certainly describe as a mad scientist.
There's no evidence that Frankenstein author Mary Shelley visited the castle or heard about its legendary resident (Johann Konrad Dippel), but she did visit that region of Germany before writing her groundbreaking novel.
