The publishing experts we follow have plenty of craft and creative process advice to offer.

Here are the ones that we thought were can't-miss for our authors:

  • Write your first draft for yourself: There is so much creative freedom in knowing the first draft's purpose is simply to exist, so Anne R. Allen encourages all writers to simply lay that groundwork and focus on finessing it (much) later (Anne R. Allen's Blog...with Ruth Harris).

  • The gravity of a single word: A guest poster provides examples of how particular care, versus quantity, in anyone's use of language can reverberate with a reader or listener (Live Write Thrive).

  • Why intentional storytelling matters in an AI era: Intentional storytelling, to K.M. Weiland, uses formulas as tools, not a framework, and assigns a particular intention to every plot choice — and sets its creators apart from content created by a machine or for algorithmic purposes (Helping Writers Become Authors).

  • The one answer that matters: A recent writing conference reminded Greer Macallister that it doesn't matter why you're writing; it matters that you can articulate why you write and what your goals with it and with publishing — if that's your interest — are (Writer Unboxed).
