You’ve undoubtedly noticed the surge in high-profile instances of authors facing scrutiny for how they depict marginalized groups in their works.

The Guardian’s Leo Benedictus dug deeper into this phenomenon, dubbed “cancel culture,” to examine its effect on the young-adult genre.

It won’t surprise you to learn that it discourages writers — but it may, however, surprise you to learn that many authors interviewed would only speak under pseudonyms.
