Dean Wesley Smith has noticed that authors tend to struggle with long-term thinking when it comes to their writing, but not necessarily everything else.

So that’s the good news — he knows they can do it, they just need help applying that skill.

Smith provides an example of choices he made that paid off far better in the long run than the short run, and he also shares an analogy that he hopes will help writers better visualize the benefits of long-term thinking.
