If the word "influencer" reminds you of the Fyre Music Festival documentaries that were so popular earlier this year, take a deep breath.

When Shayla Raquel, author of The 10 Commandments of Author Branding, talks about reaching out to influencers, she’s referring to known experts on a topic with a significant following, not paid Instagrammers.

Think Joanna Penn and David Gaughran — people who, by mentioning you on social media or by praising your book, could drive your book sales through the roof.

Raquel shares her advice on which influencers to approach, how to do so, and what not to do in a guest post on Jane Friedman’s blog.

And in case you’re skeptical, she finishes with a pie-in-the-sky success story of her own.
