Jane Friedman isn’t trying to ban the use of five specific story openers.

She does want to point out, though, that some of them will betray weaknesses in all but the strongest writers, while others are just simply clichéd and tired.

Friedman identifies five opening scenes to avoid and explains their limitations in a post on her blog.
