Past teachers may have encouraged you to add adjectives and adverbs to your essays and discouraged you from beginning a sentence with “and” or “but.”

Well, we already told you that you could ignore the latter rule, and we’re about to share justification for discarding the former, too.

Author Jonelle Patrick has six strategies for going beyond the senses and bringing a scene’s setting to life — and one of them is to focus on other parts of speech instead of adjectives and adverbs.
