How and when to spill your characters' secrets

Mystery author Tessa Wegert has come up with a great analogy for how you reveal pieces of your characters’ backstory.

Treat it like slices of pumpkin pie — to be shared in small quantities at the right moment, not all at once.

A more precise (though less colorful) way of explaining it is to consider whether the fact is immediately relevant to the current situation.
