Count Dave King among those who saw their productivity plummet in the early days of the year.

His lack of focus made him think, strangely, of a historical example of extreme focus: the Codex Gigas, a massive medieval book.

Scholars agree that one man wrote all 310 leaves — each being approximately 36 inches tall and 20 inches wide, by the way — and it’s likely that this man was a monk known as Herman the Recluse.

Herman (or whoever wrote the Codex Gigas) would have spent his entire working life, or about twenty years, on just that project.

King admits that it sounds crazy to modern ears, but points out that there are lessons to be learned from Herman’s dedication.

He shares how you can channel Herman the Recluse in the present day, to further your writing, in a column at Writer Unboxed.
