Most of the advice we’ve shared in regards to writing about criminals has assumed that the criminal is the villain.

But of course, there are plenty of delightful works of fiction in which the hero is on the wrong side of the law.

David Corbett considers there to be five subgenres of the criminal-as-hero story, though the boundaries are fluid and not firm; he breaks down each of the five criminal-hero archetypes and provides examples at Writer Unboxed.
