Authors have had the importance of reviews drilled into their heads.
And one popular place to solicit and store those is Goodreads.
Unfortunately, many writers are finding that it’s also a popular place for bad actors to target them.
Several of them spoke with TIME recently about extortion demands and review-bombing on the popular reader website.
Many said they were targeted because they spoke out on social issues elsewhere — and that getting help from Goodreads was difficult, if not impossible.
Goodreads, in a statement to TIME, said it is “actively assessing all available options to take further action against the small number of bad actors who have attempted extortion scams.”
