Reflections on beginnings for the new year

The changing of the year set writer Greer Macallister to pondering the various beginnings involved in writing a novel.

One of them — the published first words of the first chapter — is admittedly difficult to nail.

But, Macallister says, the other one — the first words in the novel that you actually write — is far easier.
