We recently read a thriller novel, whose title we'll keep private since we didn't think the book was all that great.

Nevertheless, we willingly finished the book, because we wanted to see how it ended — even though the characters didn't resonate very strongly with us.

And upon reading a different author's advice on writing a domestic thriller, we realized why we kept reading in spite of our criticism.

That other author had followed all of writer Leah Konen's suggestions, to a T.

(Well, we can't speak to whether the other author had, in fact, changed up the plot points they thought were set in stone — but the purpose of that tip, to surprise readers by surprising yourself, was in fact met.)

Konen's five tips to writing a domestic thriller are up at Writer's Digest.
