The literary birthday being celebrated today is not, as the title might have led you to believe, Washington Irving's.
Rather, it's Edgar Allan Poe's (his 213th, to be exact).
Irving, a friend of his, wrote a letter of praise for Poe's story "William Wilson" — but adds a gentle critique of a different, earlier story, which Literary Hub believes to be "The Fall of the House of Usher."
You can read Irving's writing advice to Poe (and follow a link to the full letter) at Lit Hub.
