Stepping outside of your comfort zone is easier said than done.

So why not make your main character do it instead? Or in addition, as author Kathleen McCleary has done.

When she reflected on what her summer full of new experiences taught her about herself, she realized that it could also be a useful exercise for the protagonist of her work in progress, too.
