Author and book coach Mary McDonough, quite literally, one day opted to pick up dog waste over writing.

While the former is a necessary evil if you own a pup, sure, it wasn't exactly what McDonough needed to be doing.

Fortunately, her coaching experience led her not to continue to beat herself up for it, but rather to explore why she was procrastinating.

It occurred to her, then, that she was using rather uninspiring verbs when she thought about writing — must, should, have.

That's the inner critic's voice, and one that can be a real killjoy.

McDonough talks you through how to handle the critical voice and return to writing, with a sense of joy, in a post for Writer Unboxed.
