A theme emerged in the craft advice recently.

Women Writers, Women's Books set that tone with an essay from author Melanie Dickerson on why readers need authors to dive deep when it comes to characters' emotions — the good, the bad, and the ugly.

If you're actually recounting your own experiences, rather than borrowing loosely from them, this may be especially hard (or hard in a different way).

To that end, writer and editor Áine Greaney shares five tips for making it easier to write about hard stuff.

But if you're writing about fictional pain — mostly physical but also emotional — Angela Ackerman recommends considering the three stages of pain awareness in a post at Writers Helping Writers.
