The publishing experts we follow have plenty of craft advice to offer.

Here are the ones that we thought were can't-miss for our authors:

  • Writing a novel, scene by scene: Jenny Hansen calls her writing style "story quilting," and whether you're a pantser, plotter, or plantser, you can make this particular method work for you, too (Writers Helping Writers).

  • Top list of romance tropes: Dave Chesson provides over 150 ideas to inspire your next love story (Kindlepreneur).

  • Are heroes obsolete?: Well, we'll spoil Donald Maass's ending by saying, he doesn't think the idea of a hero or heroine is completely passé, but he does see a difference in how we depict such a person (Writer Unboxed).

  • We're messy, and our characters should be too: Sarah Callender volunteered to place calls to undecided voters; unsurprisingly, she received a lot of rudeness, but perhaps surprisingly, when she responded with empathy, she took in a writing — and life – lesson (Writer Unboxed).

  • Seven tips for writing a YA character caught between worlds: Author Allen Zadoff shares his advice for how to depict your fictional teens' struggle to straddle different social identities (Writer's Digest).
