The publishing experts we follow have plenty of advice to offer, spanning a variety of topics.

Here are the ones that we thought were can't-miss for our authors:

  • How to write for change: Stephanie Mitchell shares various strategies for writing what she calls an activist memoir — one that explicitly or implicitly calls for a broader change (Jane Friedman).

  • The summoned writer: Barbara Linn Probst explores the difference not between pantsing and plotting, but between telling a story that arises consciously versus almost unconsciously (Writer Unboxed).

  • Imposter or outsider?: Mary Camarillo reflects on the ways in which being an outsider can make you feel like an imposter — and how to counteract the latter feeling while drawing lessons from your experience as the former (Women Writers, Women's Books).

  • Why summer book prep matters for holiday marketing: You can cringe all you want at the Halloween (and Christmas) decor flooding stores, but the fact of the matter is that authors, too, need to take concrete steps during the warmer months in order to capitalize on year-end book shopping; Penny Sansevieri lists those action items for you (Author Marketing Experts).

  • Exploring global distribution, metadata, and accessibility: ALLi's Anna Featherstone interviews Danica Favorite of PublishDrive about how to handle the various challenges that indie authors face when looking to share their stories worldwide (Alliance of Independent Authors).
