The Digital Reader, as befits the blog’s name, has a few tech-related issues to alert you about.

Nate Hoffelder suspects that the website eBookMall has been taken over by a scammer.

The buy buttons now say “read for free,” and Hoffelder isn’t going to gamble on where those links now lead.

His advice: Don’t click those buttons; if you have, run a security check on your computer, and if you provided a credit card number, call your card issuer now.

The other issue he’s stumbled upon is a little more high-tech.

People using Calibre as a content server — which is beyond the typical use of converting ebook formats — shouldn’t leave the server running constantly, because hackers can sneak into their computers that way.

And, according to at least one computer security expert, hackers have broken in that way, too.
