The 2019 Pulitzer Prize winners were announced yesterday.

The full list of winners, including those in journalism, is available on the Pulitzer website, but we’re highlighting the book winners below.

Fiction: The Overstory, by Richard Powers.

General nonfiction: Amity and Prosperity: One Family and the Fracturing of America, by Eliza Griswold.

History: Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom, by David W. Blight.

Biography: The New Negro: The Life of Alain Locke, by Jeffrey C. Stewart.

Poetry: Be With, by Forrest Gander.

Drama: Fairview, by Jackie Sibblies Drury.

The award criteria is simply that the author be American and that the prize jury consider the work “distinguished.”
