Once upon a time, a spoiler alert was truly something to heed, according to the Guardian.
The word, after all, used to refer to a pillager or plunderer, or at least it did in 1535.
And its more modern use — that of something that ruins a plot twist — actually dates back several decades, to National Lampoon magazine in the 1970s.
