Congratulations to Colson Whitehead, who has become the first writer in almost a decade to star on the cover of TIME magazine!

Whitehead, whose next book comes out July 16, grabbed the literary stage three years ago with The Underground Railroad, a novel that won both a National Book Award and a Pulitzer Prize.

That novel imagined an actual rail line that brought people to freedom; The Nickel Boys, the upcoming release, is set in the Jim Crow era.

So as you can imagine, his TIME profile explores racial issues, in addition to the typical analysis of how Whitehead became an author and what he’s like outside of the writing world.

The piece, which dubs him “America’s Storyteller,” is available to read here.
