It's worth noting that our nation's founding fathers, in addition to appreciating independence, had a strong respect and affection for reading.

Enjoy these (mostly) nonpolitical bon mots along with parades and fireworks today.

John Adams

“I read my eyes out and can’t read half enough…the more one reads the more one sees we have to read.”

“Let us tenderly and kindly cherish therefore, the means of knowledge. Let us dare to read, think, speak, and write.”

Benjamin Franklin

“The person who deserves most pity is a lonesome one on a rainy day who doesn't know how to read.”

“Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.”

Thomas Jefferson

“I cannot live without books.”

John Hancock

“There, I guess King George will be able to read that without his spectacles!”
