Ready to start the week out on a high note?

Fourteen authors who’ve appeared at Hay Festival events (with one more to come) shared their picks for books to read during dark times.

Not all of them are lighthearted, comic, and fluffy – in fact, very few of them seem to fit any part of that description — but the writers who nominated them did so for that very reason.

As one author put it, “Books should disturb, complicate, and make things uncomfortable in order to push the reader to create their own understanding of reality and their own sense of hope.”

(If you disagree with that sentiment, then you can probably skip checking out the suggestions, posted on Literary Hub.)
