Harry Potter isn’t the only YA franchise to recently celebrate two decades of charming fans.

The Series of Unfortunate Events books, written by Lemony Snicket (aka Daniel Handler), also hit that milestone, though with less fanfare than Harry Potter a few years ago.

Still, says Marianne Eloise, we shouldn’t overlook Lemony Snicket’s literary importance, nor Handler’s impressive accomplishments.

Eloise explains what made A Series of Unfortunate Events so memorable in a column in the Guardian.

The CliffsNotes version, though? "Handler’s series did something other books would not: took children seriously."
