Lucy Ellmann may have come up short in the fight for the Booker Prize, but she won’t end 2019 empty-handed.

Ducks, Newburyport received the 2019 Goldsmiths Prize and its purse of £10,000 (about $13,000).

The novel is almost exclusively made up of a single thousand-page sentence, which has caused some reviewers to comment on its difficulty.

Ellmann’s response? “My own estimation is that everyone can understand it, give or take a few babies.”

You can read more about the novel and why judges chose it on the Goldsmiths Prize website.
