HBO showrunners had initially planned to make the final season of Game of Thrones into three movies, not six episodes, says George R.R. Martin.

The author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, upon which Game of Thrones is based, shared this information with German media over the weekend.

CNet reported from a Reddit user’s translation of the interview, in which Martin explains that HBO nixed the idea. (Though it still granted the creators a hefty budget, which was the whole idea of making movies versus a TV season.)

And yes, the interviewer asked Martin about the final two ASOIF novels.

The Winds of Winter — still in progress — and A Dream of Spring — long in the future, like the actual season feels — will diverge from the show, Martin said again.
