The New York Times bestseller has lost a frequent visitor: Clive Cussler has passed away at the age of eighty-eight.

His wife, Janet, announced on Twitter today that the novelist died Monday.

Cussler wrote or co-wrote more than eighty books, twenty-five of those starring Dirk Pitt, and the Guardian notes that his thrillers influenced by history and myth set the stage for writers like James Patterson and Dan Brown.

We'll still see a few more novels from him this year: Journey of the Pharaohs on March 10, Wrath of Poseidon on May 26, and the untitled fifteenth book in his Oregon Files series.
