Maybe there was a reason Amazon didn’t seek public acknowledgment of its donation to a bookstore charity.
A day after the charity’s CEO announced that Amazon was the anonymous donor of £250,000 (about $309,000), the leader of the Booksellers Association — a trade organization in the UK — sharply criticized the gift.
Meryl Halls had initially praised the gift but now questions the motivation behind it.
“A common reaction amongst booksellers has been – ‘if Amazon really wants to support independent bookshops, then let them join bookshops in paying its fair share of tax,’” she said, according to The Bookseller magazine.
