Marieke Lucas Rijneveld has received the COVID-delayed International Booker Prize for 2020.
They share the £50,000 ($64,400) prize with Michele Hutchison, who translated their debut novel—The Discomfort of Evening—from Dutch into English.
Rijneveld, at 29, is the youngest winner of the International Booker Prize and just slightly older than the youngest Booker Prize winner (the then-28-year-old Eleanor Catton), according to the Guardian.
The Discomfort of Evening, a bestseller in the Netherlands, explores a family’s grief at the death of a young son, particularly at how it affects his sister, Jas, who had previously wished he would die rather than her pet rabbit.
