Today in surprise holiday writer: George Saunders, currently best known for Lincoln in the Bardo.

Literary Hub links back to a few such stories, published over the years in the New Yorker, though with the caveat that they are “about trying to bring joy to people you love and messing it up.”

For a bit of comedic relief, there’s also the bedtime story he read on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert back in 2015 — a clip of which, complete with a bedcap-sporting Colbert, is available on YouTube or just below.
