Most of us can imagine, even if we didn’t meet them, that our great-grandparents lived through challenging times and hopefully rose to the occasion.

Author Michelle Duster is among those who know for sure just how incredible their ancestors were — Ida B. Wells, the celebrated journalist and civil rights activist, is one of her great-grandmothers.

Listen to her conversation with Mary Louise Kelly below or read a complete transcript on NPR’s website.
