If you follow us on Instagram, you already know that today is both author James Joyce’s birthday and the anniversary of the complete publication of his epic work Ulysses.

You probably don’t have time to read all of Ulysses today in honor of the occasion, but you can at least take in some of it — in the author’s own voice.

Literary Hub shares the story of why Joyce recorded himself reading a passage from Ulysses, along with, of course, the recording itself (embedded below, too).

(And as a bonus, there’s the story of why Joyce then recorded a section from Finnegans Wake, along with that audio as well.)
