Truth is stranger than fiction.

You may doubt that on occasion while reading fiction, but to prove the point, we present an article about Water for Elephants author Sara Gruen’s fight to free a man she believed was wrongfully convicted.

Journalist and longtime friend Abbott Kahler wrote about how Gruen met California inmate Charles Murdoch, how he successfully appealed to her emotions, and how her work to overturn his conviction became a danger to her mental and physical health — and to her loved ones.

The piece on Gruen’s saga is on The Marshall Project’s website.
