English-only readers have long been able to read Marguerite Duras’s best-known works, but until recently, they didn’t have access to her debut novel.

The first English translation of The Impudent Ones came out this month, decades after it was published in French in 1943.

In addition to the novel Moderato Cantabile and the fictionalized autobiography, The Lover, Duras was acclaimed in her lifetime as a screenwriter — both for adaptations of her own work and of others’.
