Dystopia may feel overdone, especially in young adult literature, but we think author Marissa Levien’s attitude is the right one.

As she writes in Writer’s Digest, dystopia is “a popular genre with some incredible highs and some very derivative lows.”

So if you’ve been on the fence about trying (or continuing in) the genre, go for it — but consider the three rules for writing a good dystopian novel that worked for Levien.
